Safety Training

Safety training for training's sake is no guarantee of fleet safety.  But by default, lack of safety training and proper instruction does increase risk.  Example:  We assume a new hire is competent in preparing a drivers daily log because they've been driving professionally for several years - until we discover the previous employer(s) had no auditing process to catch errors or falsification.  We find hours of service violations too late after a fatal collision.  Now the company is being sued for millions.  Was it worth the risk?  Don't roll the dice with safety.  Rule of thumb:  Always assume incomptency unless trained or tested otherwise.  Never assign safety responsiblities until buy in and understanding have been established.  Sometimes this will require more than a mere acknowledgement form.  Manage for results - not mere compliance.

  • Driver ID: Your company name, then your first name using NO spaces.
  •      EXAMPLE: "Dan" working for "ECI" would type in "ecidan"
  • Confirm Driver ID: Exact same data as in above step
  • Site ID: 3109 for the month of March (4109 for April, 5109 for May, etc.)

    • Once in one menu, you can click on the button to move to another sub-menu

    • If you stop part way though a lesson when you sign in (same login) you'll see that lesson title in green and clicking on it will take back to where you stopped the last time.

      Use multiple formats and media when training.  It's o.k. to stand up in front of someone and speak to them.  A lot of people are audible learners and will be able to pick up the safety message quickly.  Also, depending upon verbal and non-verbal emphsasis such as inflection, tone of voice and hand motions, visual learners will pick up additional information based upon this input.  Printed format is always an excellent media to use as analytic learners need to read, review and internalize pertinent documentation in order to process the message.  Printed material supplemented with photos, diagrams and other visuals also assist the visual learner who might not pick up everything on the written page due to their learning style.  The kinetic learner must become personally involved in the process in order to learn and understand the message.  This is particularly true of the driving profession which tends towards kinesthetic, hands-on learning.
     
    Show, tell and do, hands-on instruction techniques work best in this situation.  In cab, behind the wheel, and road tests should be performed during orientation, even if the driver already has their CDL.  Each operation has unique components that can only be explained in real world situations.  Remedial training is recommended any time Risk Associated Behavior is exhibited.  RAB includes tickets, accidents, near misses, logging violations and other DOT or company policy infractions.

    Bottom line - don't rely on a one-size-fits all method of communicating safety programs and assigning safety responsibilities.  But don't try to analyze the learning style of each personality either.  By providing plenty of variety - video, computer, powerpoint, audio, printed, verbal, photos, hands on training, etc. the safety message will be effectivley communicated to everyone.
