Today's Transportation Safety Profession

The position of Fleet Safety Director or Safety Manager has traditionally been occupied by operations personnel who at one time began their career as a driver.  It's also not uncommon for fleet safety professionals to have a background in motor carrier law enforcement.  Certainly the hands on skills of in-cab, behind-the-wheel experience lend great credibility when instructing professional drivers in safety.  But there is much more to managing a safety program then just working with drivers.  Since all personnel affect safety and compliance, today's transportation safety professional must be adept in management skills across all organizational functions.

Job Description

  • The Safety Manager job description template includes the following job summary: To serve as the staff specialist in safety by developing and carrying out procedures with the line organization that effectively control accident and health exposures in the company and minimize OSHA (and DOT) citations. http://www.bnet.com
  • *Often the safety management function is combined within the organization such as claims, personnel, industrial relations or insurance.  To be most effective however, fleet management should specifically assign the management of the safety function to an individual.  All motor fleets must be able to call upon the talents and training of a safety administrator.  This individual must possess both the technical expertise necessary for an understanding of the operation of the safety function within the fleet as well as the management skills to bring about implementation of a safety program capabale of producing positive results.  *Motor Fleet Safety Supervision - Principles and Practices - ATA/NATMI - (C) 1998

To those contemplating a career in fleet safety and to seasoned professionals alike -always stay in pursuit of the noble goal - total elimination of injuries and collisions.
